Bad review cost calculator

An estimate, not a measurement. Put your own numbers in, and change the assumption if you disagree with it.

The default is 7%. Change it if you have a better number for your trade.

The assumption, in the open

The default of 7% per star comes from a 2011 Harvard Business School study by Michael Luca, which measured independent restaurants in Seattle using Yelp ratings and found a 5 to 9% revenue change per star. That is one sector, one city, one platform and one decade ago. It is a reasonable starting point and it is not a finding about your business, which is why the number is a field you can change rather than a constant we hide.

What the number is good for

Not for a business plan. It is for deciding whether the reputation work is worth an hour a week, and for the conversation with whoever thinks it is not. Treat the output as an order of magnitude.

Closing the gap

Whatever the real figure is, it moves the same way: more recent reviews, and answers to the ones already there. ReviewMix gives you the ask, the inbox and the widget. The free plan covers one business.

Questions

Is this number reliable?
It is an estimate built on a study of Seattle restaurants, applied to whatever trade you are in. Use it as an order of magnitude, not a forecast, and change the percentage if you have a better one.
Why can I edit the percentage?
Because the honest version of this tool shows its assumption. A fixed multiplier presented as a fact would be a statistic we invented about your business.
How fast can a rating actually move?
It depends on how many reviews you already have. The more you have, the more new ones it takes to shift the average, which our rating calculator works out exactly.
