The whole story

Built by one European founder, for European founders.

ReviewMix exists because I needed it on my own clients' sites and could not find a version I was willing to sign a DPA for.

Where it started

I have spent fifteen years in marketing: management, PR, social media, content, launches, customer care. For the last part of that I have run Maven Advertising SRL, a small agency in Iași that builds and runs Google Ads, Meta Ads, and WordPress sites for businesses across the EU.

Every one of those sites wanted the same two things on the page: the Google reviews the business had already earned, and a few named customers saying in their own words why they came back. Every tool that did this well was hosted in the US, priced in dollars, and quiet about where the data went.

For a Romanian dental clinic or a German consultancy, that is not a preference question. Since the Schrems II ruling, sending a customer's name, photo, and words to a US-parented service needs Standard Contractual Clauses, a transfer assessment, and safeguards you can actually show. Most small businesses sign the checkbox and hope. I did not want to keep recommending that to clients.

Why I thought I could build it

I am not a career developer. I am a marketer who runs a production homelab, the kind with a virtualisation cluster, a firewall appliance, and a rack of containers that has to stay up. Hosting a service on EU hardware I control was operational muscle I already had. The application code was the part I had to learn, and I learned it by building this.

That order matters. ReviewMix was designed from the infrastructure up. Where the data sits, who can read it, and how a person withdraws their consent were decided before the first screen was drawn.

A small European business should not have to treat compliance as somebody else's problem.

What "hosted in the EU" means here

Not "EU region" on a US cloud. The words on our homepage are checkable, so here is what they resolve to.

  • The server is in Falkenstein, Germany, at Hetzner Online GmbH, a German company with no US parent in the data path.
  • Google reviews are fetched once and cached in EU Postgres. Your visitors are served from that cache. Nothing is piped live from a US endpoint when the widget renders.
  • The widget respects the visitor's consent choices. It reads the host page's consent banner and Consent Mode v2, never injects into a blocked context, and falls back to a cookie-free rendering path instead of failing.
  • Consent is recorded per field, name, photo, company, paid-ads use, in a ledger that is appended to and never edited or deleted.
  • The person who wrote the testimonial keeps control. They can view, edit, withdraw, or export it from a link, with no account and no login, and the change reaches your embedded widget within about a minute.
  • The sub-processor list is public and short. Hetzner, Cloudflare, Stripe, Resend, and Google, each with what it processes and why. The DPA is a download, not a sales conversation.

What it is not

ReviewMix is a focused utility, not a platform. It imports Google reviews, collects testimonials, lets you approve what shows, and embeds both in one widget. That is the whole job.

A star figure in the widget is always the source's true number. You may choose what to display. You may not make it say something it does not.

There is no enterprise tier, no sales call, and no roadmap item that exists to look good in a comparison table. Plans start free and the paid ones are priced for a single site or a small agency, in euros, with VAT handled the European way.

How it is run

One person builds it, hosts it, answers the email, and writes the legal pages. That has costs: features ship at the pace one founder can ship and test them, and the changelog is honest about what is not built yet.

It also has an upside. If something breaks, you write to us through the contact form and the person who wrote the code reads it the same day. If the DPA needs a clause your lawyer wants, you are talking to the person who can add it. If Hetzner changed its ownership tomorrow, you would hear it from me, thirty days before anything moved, because that is written into the sub-processor page.

I am building the tool the way I want to use it on my own client sites. That is the closest thing to a product strategy this company has.
