How to reply to a five-star Google review

A good reply to a five-star review is two lines long, names the customer and the specific thing they liked, and invites them back. Identical thank-yous read like a bot.

Title card reading "How to reply to a 5-star review. Two lines, not Thank you!!"
In short

Reply to a five-star Google review in two lines. Use the customer's name and the specific thing they praised, then add one sentence that invites them back. The same "Thank you!!" under every review reads like a bot to the next customer who scrolls past.

To reply to a 5-star Google review, write two lines: thank the customer by name for the specific thing they praised, then add one sentence that invites them back. That is enough. The reply is read less by the reviewer than by the next customer deciding whether you are worth a visit.

ReviewMix shows every Google review in one inbox, where the Needs reply filter lists the reviews nobody has answered yet, so the five-star reviews do not sit unanswered while the critical ones get the attention.

How should I reply to a 5-star Google review?

Reply to a five-star Google review by naming the customer, repeating the specific thing they praised, and inviting them back in one sentence. Specific beats warm: "Thanks, Ana, glad the cortado lived up to it" says more than a paragraph of gratitude.

A good five-star reply has three parts, and fits in two lines:

  • Their name, as it appears on the review.
  • The detail they mentioned: the dish, the stylist, the job, the speed.
  • One forward line: "See you next time", "Say hi to Mihai at your next appointment".

Why "Thank you!!" isn't a reply

"Thank you!!" under every review is not a reply because it carries nothing only this customer could receive. Forty identical thank-yous in a row tell the next reader that nobody actually read the reviews, which is the opposite of what replying is for.

Long replies fail in a different way. Four hundred words under a five-star review are not read by anyone, including the person who wrote the review. Two lines is the length that gets read.

Three example replies

Three examples, each answering a real-sounding five-star review:

  • Café. Review: "Best cinnamon buns in town, and the staff remembered my order." Reply: "Thanks, Elena! The buns come out at 8, so we'll have one ready with your usual."
  • Salon. Review: "Ioana fixed a colour another place had ruined." Reply: "Thank you, Diana. Ioana was thrilled to read this; we'll pass it on. See you for the next one."
  • Trade service. Review: "Boiler fixed the same day, clear price before starting." Reply: "Thanks, Radu. Same-day and a price first is how we like to work. Call us any time."

How fast to reply, and keeping up when reviews pile up

Reply to a five-star review within a few days, while the visit is still recent for the customer. Speed matters less than consistency: a profile where every review has a specific reply reads better than one where only the bad ones do.

Keeping up is the hard part when reviews arrive across several locations. In ReviewMix, the inbox's Needs reply filter lists every review without a reply on every plan. Replying from the dashboard is available on Pro and above, from €12 a month (see pricing). For the reviews that are not five stars, how to reply to a negative Google review covers the harder case.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to reply to every positive Google review?
You do not have to, but a short, specific reply to each one shows readers that someone reads the reviews. If there are too many to answer individually, reply to the ones that mention a person, a product or a detail, and keep the rest brief rather than identical.
Can I mention a promotion in a reply to a review?
Keep promotions out of review replies. A reply is read as a conversation with that customer; a sales line under their praise reads as using it. Mentioning something relevant they might enjoy next time is fine.
